Biking: 54 miles
This was one of the warmest days so far. It started out in Lusk, WY, with bright skies after a torrential downpour overnight.

One thing I don’t write about enough is Brian’s journey. He spends a lot of time during the day breaking down camp and setting up at the next campground, so that means late night work to keep up with his job. But, he still finds ways to enjoy the trip, like stopping at historical markers along the way or working outside at the campground. He’s the hero of the trip.

The temperature rose quickly today, so we were motivated to ride fast and get to our destination before the temperature spiked at noon. About halfway, we crossed from Wyoming into Nebraska. We’ve been in Wyoming for 10 days, and it’s been a good run. The highways aren’t too busy, and the shoulders are wide. We loved the tailwinds over the past few days, but it’s time to move on.

Not much of a tailwind today, in fact, I think we had a headwind, but it was light and helped us stay cool as the day heated up.
Crossing into Nebraska, the sign says “Nebraska…the good life.” We’re hoping that proves to be true for us. The next few days will be hot, followed by a week of long days in the saddle. We’re hoping for cool breezes and gentle hills.
I have to admit that I was surprised by the last five miles of our trip today, descending into Fort Robinson State Park. The hills are beautiful and much more green than I expected. Nebraska is making a good first impression.
Speaking of Brian, today is our 27-year anniversary. We got to spend it in Nebraska…ha ha ha…. but seriously, we had a good dinner at the lodge here at the park. I’m lucky to have such a supportive partner.

The next two nights, Anita and Mark will be staying in different towns from us. The towns we’re scheduled to stay in don’t have availability in hotels or AirBNBs, and they wisely decided not to camp, given the high temps over the next few days. That means we’ll be riding different distances each day. I’ll share our separate journeys here on the blog.
