Biking: 47 miles (Denise), 27 miles (Anita and Mark)
Today I rode to Hay Springs, and Anita and Mark rode to Chadron to stay in a hotel. They were smart because the temps were too high to camp.
Besides the heat, the biking has been uneventful. We’re sticking to Route 20, with its wide shoulder and low traffic. The shoulder sometime has large cracks that are tricky to cross, so for those segments, we ride in the road instead. That’s much smoother, and with the small amount of traffic, it hasn’t been an issue.
Brian and I stayed in a campground in Hay Springs called Sunset RV Park. It’s a first-come-first-serve park with no reservations and just 13 spots. We were worried that the campground might fill up on the weekend of Labor Day, but luckily, when we got here only one other camper was in a spot. And, no one else showed up. So we nearly had the place to ourselves. We feel really lucky because this is the only campground in town.
Tomorrow will be a challenging day. Anita and Mark plan to ride 100 miles in the heat to get to their next town, Cody. Luckily, the weather prediction has the temps a little lower than today, but the wind will be stronger. They’re tough, so I know they’ll do it, but oh boy will it be a long day!
