Bike Trip Day 33: Casper to Douglas

Biking: 65 miles

Cyclists debate whether it’s better to ride across country east-to-west or west-to-east. Some say the prevailing winds come from the west, so west-to-east is best, more wind at your back. Others say the wind direction changes so much, it doesn’t matter. Besides, the west is so beautiful, save it for the end, when you’re running out of steam. It’s like a reward for all your hard work; ride east-to-west.

But, based on our experiences over the past few days, it’s clear to us. West-to-East. These are long rides in the saddle, and having a 15 mph tailwind makes the day shorter. That’s especially appreciated in the hot, flat grasslands.

Today was one of those days. We rode 65 miles, but most of it was with a lovely tailwind. This is day three of tailwinds, and we’re loving it.

The sun was bright, and we had a few climbs, but not much.

A great day, and shorter than we expected. The tailwind got us into Douglas in time for lunch. We ate at a Mexican restaurant in town, and then headed to the hotel and the RV park.

Mark and Anita had a visitor for dinner, Mark’s son Kyle, who lives in Denver. He was in Cheyenne for work and came to Douglas to spend some time with them. Another person Mark knows along the way.

Tomorrow is a shorter day, 57 miles to Lusk. Looking at more tailwinds which will make the last of our riding in Wyoming very pleasant.
