Biking: 60 miles
Tailwinds. That’s the headline today. We love tailwinds.
Today, I biked from Potholes State Park, and Anita and Mark biked from Othello. The sun was still rising when I left the park a little after 6 am. We met up about 13 miles into the ride, and covered the rest of the route easily. Wind was coming from the SW, and we were heading NE. Perfect.
The roads were mostly flat with a few gentle inclines. We loved the frontage road that runs along I-90 – well-maintained, wide shoulder, and low traffic.
The skies were smoky, and it seemed to get worse as we got closer to Ritzville. We haven’t experienced any breathing issues, but I did have a headache the first day of the smoke. I’ve noticed that visibility gets worse in the afternoon, and that correlates with the air quality. This morning my bike was covered with small white flecks. At first I thought something fell from the trees, but turns out it was ash from the fires. I’ll be glad when we’re clear of the smoke – and I hope for the sake of the people of Washington that they’re able to get the fires under control soon.
When we arrived in Ritzville just before noon, the main street was blocked off and a band was playing on a stage. Turns out the town is having an annual festival with an antique car show and 10 hours of music. We had lunch at a cafe downtown and enjoyed the music.
Getting ready for tomorrow’s ride which should be just under 50 miles, if all goes to plan. We’re headed to Cheney, just below Spokane, where the air quality is iffy. We’re keeping an eye on it.
