Countdown to cross-country biking: 8 days
Mileage today: 65 miles
Today was the big climb day, two mountain passes. The first was amazing. If you have a lot of free time, you can watch this video of me coming down the other side of the pass.
The second was even higher, and absolutely beautiful, but I misjudged my time, and I hit the climb just as the headwinds reached about 15 mph. So, it was a slow climb. But Brian was waiting for me at the top of both passes with cold water, iced coffee, and anything else I needed. He’s such an awesome guy! You don’t know how happy I was to see that RV at the top of both mountains…such a relief.

The roads today were perfect, a decent shoulder and very little traffic. i actually got to lift my head most of the time and look around. This is an incredible part of the country.

It was a long day in the saddle, but we celebrated after the finish with some homemade pizza from a little restaurant in Dillon that gave western saloon vibes. This town feels like it just stepped out of the early 1800s.
Tomorrow should be a little easier, just 57 miles and 2000 feet of climbing. Only one mountain pass, and it doesn’t look as tough as the others. Then, it’s all down hill after mile 30.
It’s been good to tackle this week of the cross-country ride. I was worried I wasn’t ready for the challenge, but after these first three days, I think I’m ready. Just two more days to go, and I’ll have about a week to address some bike issues and RV issues before the official start of the ride on August 1.
