We have so many decisions to make and pieces of the trip to plan as we move through the next six months. One thing I’ve been thinking about is taking pictures and videos during our rides. Lots of riders use their phones and take one hand off the bars to shoot. But, that makes me nervous. And, I don’t necessarily want to use a GoPro because I don’t need lots of video. I just want to capture meaningful moments.
So, when I saw the new Oakley Meta glasses I was intrigued. Here’s a way to take pictures and videos, listen to music, and protect my eyes all in one product. Yes, it’s Meta, which is the one hesitation for me. But, only using them during biking limits Meta’s access to my data…not that they aren’t already tracking everything we do.
Merry Christmas to me! Turns out, Brian was so worried that the glasses might sell out that he bought them before Black Friday (but spoiler there was no sale on these bad boys anyway). On Christmas morning, he saved this gift for last, making me a little worried, but I should have known he would come through.
I took them out for a spin yesterday. Anita and I got on the road for the first time in 2026. It was 37 degrees with light snow. But, no ice, so we were all in – and also all bundled up. Here’s a photo that I took with the glasses.

Not a bad picture of an overcast January day in Pennsylvania. I have the option to overlay my stats from Strava, so I did that for this photo. Pretty cool.
The one issue I’m having is that there is no location data on the photos. So, I can’t see on the map where I took the picture. I’m reading online that there is a way to get the glasses to record this info, so I’ll be experimenting to see how to make it happen. That’s a must-have for the trip!
I’ll keep using them and report any issues or tricks that I learn. For now, I’m having fun playing around with them.
